Choose PLA if easy, reliable printing matters most

PLA is the safest starting point for most FDM printer owners. It generally prints at lower temperatures, warps less than many engineering materials and produces crisp detail. That makes it well suited to display models, school projects, concept prototypes, organisers and decorative parts.

Choose PLA when the print will live indoors and will not be exposed to substantial heat, weather or repeated mechanical stress. It is also a sensible material for testing a design before committing to a more demanding filament.

Choose PLA+ for a tougher everyday option

PLA+ is a modified PLA formulation intended to improve properties such as toughness or layer adhesion while retaining much of PLA’s approachable printing behaviour. It is useful for brackets, enclosures, toys, jigs and other everyday parts where standard PLA may feel too brittle.

There is no single universal PLA+ formula. Temperatures and performance vary by brand, so use the settings printed on the spool or supplied by the manufacturer rather than assuming every PLA+ prints identically.

Choose PETG for functional, moisture-exposed parts

PETG is a strong general-purpose choice when durability matters more than the easiest possible print. It is often selected for workshop organisers, protective housings, brackets, containers and functional components. It typically offers greater toughness and temperature resistance than standard PLA.

PETG can produce fine strings if the filament is damp or retraction and temperature are not tuned. Start with the filament manufacturer’s recommended profile and adjust one setting at a time.
